The Weeknd - “Starboy” featuring Daft Punk

The Weeknd moves as smoothly as he does strategically. With fans immediately fixating on the fact that his signature dreaded hairstyle was missing on the stunning cover art for his forthcoming album, Starboy, the conversation shifted into the speculation that his new look was representative of an evolving sound. The day following the album cover reveal, a collaborative track with Daft Punk confirmed that claim, with the song taking components of the Weeknd that we’ve come to know and love and bringing them into the center of the welcome territory of forward-thinking electronic dance music. With the fond guidance of the 6-time Grammy Award winning French-electronic duo, the title track off of The Weeknd’s follow up to 2015’s Beauty Behind the Madness, “Starboy,” holds admirable qualities many different types of listeners can appreciate. With Starboy slated for a release at the end of November with XO/Republic Records, saying goodbye to summer ’16 doesn’t feel as depressing as it could be, with The Weeknd confidently crooning, “I come alive in the fall time.” We’ll follow your lead on that one, Abel.

Shawn Mendes - “Patience”

Shawn Mendes’ sophomore album, Illuminate, is already proving to be an impressively strong follow-up to his 2015 debut full-length album, Handwritten. Celebrating the release of his new project this week with none other than Jimmy Fallon during a charming appearance on The Tonight Show, the Canadian singer is beginning to hit his stride, with his new project undeniably being dubbed as essential listening for the remaining months of 2016 and then some. Despite lyrical themes of heartache and the complications that come with a first romance, his track “Patience” manages to explore those all-too-relatable frustrations in a refreshingly honest manner, while not losing sight of the singer’s now-infamous good vibe perspective. As he continues to develop as a singer-songwriter, it is becoming clear that Mendes found his true calling at a young age, with Illuminate marking the beginning of the next exciting chapter for the artist.

Gucci Mane - “Bling Blaww Burr” featuring Young Dolph

If Gucci Mane has managed to accomplish as much as he has in the second half of 2016 alone, we have no choice but to call it now: 2017 is going to be the Year of Guwop. Luckily, before seeing what the Atlanta staple can do in his first full 365 days since completing his prison sentence, Woptober is right around the corner. As his forthcoming album’s release date of October 17 fast approaches, the rapper shares his collaborative track with Young Dolph. “Bling Blaww Burr” is as playful as it is raw, with breezy, blasé vocals from both rappers laid over an icy beat skillfully crafted by Metro Boomin

Marc Anthony - “Deje de Amar” featuring Felipe Muñiz

Marc Anthony is back on our #SpotifyNMF playlist this week with “Deje de Amar,” his latest collaboration featuring his father Felipe Muñis. On the broken hearted anthem, the duo showcase their harmonizing vocal talents in a way that makes it nearly impossible to separate one from the other. The single further showcases the destined fact that the two were meant to make history together both on this track and in the culture at large, with their legendary story recently being told in Spotify’s first-ever documentary focusing on Latin music. During the documentary, the father and son perform the Sergio George-produced song live for the first time and also detail how this heartfelt collaboration brought them closer together. While Marc Anthony is an iconic musician in his own right, it’s truly special learning more about where he gets his passion for music. You can check out the new documentary in full here.

Mona - “In The Middle”

Naming their band after frontman Nick Brown’s grandmother, Mona, the Nashville-based rock group has their hearts in the right place as they creatively navigate this world’s nonsensical chaos. The five-piece outfit weaves their spirituality into the beloved gritty rock and roll sound, making for an unapologetic and alternative approach the multifaceted genre of rock has plenty of room for. Premiering their new single “In The Middle” on Spotify’s  Rock This playlist this week, the track makes for a welcome return to center stage, doubling as the band’s first official offering since their 2013 album Torches & Pitchforks. As Mona continues to refine their sound after a brief hiatus, they remain consistently inspired by the duality life offers in every circumstance, such as weighing the good with the evil. Building upon that, their track “In The Middle” epically explores the space between, embracing the fact that sometimes things aren’t as clear as black and white with this track honoring that rebellious feeling. Needless to say, we’re excited for what the group has in store next, especially as they readjust with the recent addition of members Alex Lindsey and Justin Wilson. Welcome back, y’all.
