A number of top artists -- including James Taylor, Sheryl Crow, John Mellencamp, and Don Henley -- have committed to playing a tribute concert in memory of late Billboard Editor in Chief Timothy White. As previously reported, White collapsed in an elevator June 27 in Billboard's New York offices and was rushed to St. Vincent's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead of an apparent heart attack. He was 50.

Proceeds from the concert, details of which will be announced in Billboard and on Billboard.com, will benefit White's family, including his 10-year-old twins, Alexander and Christopher, and his wife, Judy Garlan White. Additionally, proceeds from the show will be donated to a number of charities supported by Timothy, including autism-related organizations and the United Negro College Fund.

Crow says a musical tribute would be one of the most fitting ways to remember White. "I know that Timothy stood for so many things, and it would mean so much to him to know that people loved him so much and wanted to be there for his 'folk.' I think he would get a kick out of a show and in a way, I think he'll be there."

A fund for the continuing education of Christopher and Alexander White has been established. Donations may be made to Judy Garlan White, c/o Ipswich Bay Financial Group, 55 Market St., Ste. 208, Ipswich, Mass., 01938. In addition, a foundation will be established to benefit a number of White's favorite charities. Details will be announced in future Billboard issues and on Billboard.com.

Condolences to Timothy's wife, Judy, and their sons, Alexander and Christopher, can be sent to Judy Garlan White, c/o Allison Farber, Billboard, 770 Broadway, New York, N.Y. 10003.

A tribute to Timothy White appears in the July 13, 2002, issue of Billboard. An online version is being developed for Billboard.com and will be posted soon.
