Katy Perry surprises Tony Marrero, a survivor of the Orlando Pulse nightclub shooting, on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Sept. 8, 2016.

Tony Marrero says "Rise" helped him recover while in the hospital.

When Orlando nightclub shooting survivor Tony Marrero appeared on Ellen, he discussed his love for Katy Perry and her recent single "Rise," telling Ellen DeGeneres that the song helped him through the time he spent hospitalized following the attack.

DeGeneres asked if he would like to meet Perry someday, but before he even had a chance to reply, the singer was already making her way toward him.

The two hugged and cried together -- "We're both shaking, we're both electrified by each other and so inspired," Perry says, telling Marrero she's happy she could be a joy, a light, and could be there to help him in her own little way.

Perry then helped in an even bigger way: She offered to pay for his first year of film school.
