2016 Olympics: 'American Idol' La'Porsha Renae Releases 'Battles (Gold Medal Mix)'
Just in time for the opening ceremonies of the 2016 Summer Olympics, American Idol Season 15 runner-up La'Porsha Renae's anthem for the U.S. Women's Gymnastics Team is now available.
"Battles," written by Big Machine Records songwriter Who is Fancy (aka Jake Hagood), was originally performed by Renae on the Idol season finale this past April. The "Gold Medal Mix" will be the theme song for the gymnastics team as they compete for the Gold.
It will be included on Renae’s Motown debut due out this November. The song was brought to NBC’s attention by American Idol producer Megan Michaels, whose father, David, is NBC’s producer for women’s gymnastics.
The song -- with the lyrics "We all got battles/there will always be hurt, there will always be pain/ but that's what makes us who we are/we all got journeys written in the stars/ just know that you're loved and that you're enough/and your dreams won't be that far" -- will be featured throughout the competition.
Idol already has history with women's gymnastics, as the team famously used Season 11 winner Phillip Phillips' "Home" during the 2012 London Olympics.
"Battles" is available for download on iTunes.
