As first reported here last month, the album features songs Robinson has been road-testing in recent months at concerts in North American in Europe. The artist kicks off a 10-date U.S. trek Thursday (Aug. 15) in Seattle.
Like the recent live shows, "New Earth Mud" finds Robinson primarily assisted by producer Paul Stacey, who also plays guitars, drums, and keyboards throughout the 12-track set. Big Sugar members Gordie Johnson and Kelly Hoppe guest on "Untangle My Mind," while Black Crowes keyboardist Ed Harsch lends co-writing credits to "Silver Car" and "Kids That Ain't Got None." Former Crowes guitarist Marc Ford co-wrote "Sunday Sound," while Stone Temple Pilots guitarist Dean DeLeo co-wrote "Better Than the Sun."
"Writing the songs was easy, but I really felt naked when I got into the studio and it was just me and Paul," Robinson said in a statement. "I was saying to myself, 'OK big shot, you've been saying how you wanted to make a record. Well, here it is. What are you going to do?' I love that feeling, and to be honest I hadn't felt that way in a long time. I'm very proud of everything I did in the Black Crowes, but it seems like I've been waiting a lifetime to make this record."
And while Robinson's lyrical ambiguity has often made Black Crowes songs difficult to interpret, the new tunes "Katie Dear" and "Could You Really Love Me?" address his marriage to actress Kate Hudson in simple, honest terms. "Having a true and special love in your life will turn you around," Robinson said. "My ambition was to strip away any pretension and write songs about really being in love. I'm comfortable enough in my own skin now to sing about how I really feel."
