Rod Stewart, Jennifer Hudson & More Added to 'Beat Bugs' Beatles Kids Series

Rod Stewart, Jennifer Hudson, Aloe Blacc, Robbie Williams, Frances, The Lumineers and Tori Kelly have been added to the list of those covering Beatles songs in Beat Bugs, the new Netflix animated series premiering Aug. 3 that will feature songs of the Fab Four sung by contemporary artists. 

The full lineup was announced today during a Netflix panel at the Television Critics Association meeting. Also, reps revealed the series' second season will premiere in the U.S. Nov. 18 and Australian viewers will get both seasons at once on the free-to-air Seven Network.

In season one, the Beatles songs performed by contemporary artists will be highlighted by Pink's version of “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds,” Robbie Williams with “Good Day Sunshine,” Eddie Vedder singing “Magical Mystery Tour,” The Lumineers doing “Honey Pie,” and The Shins with “The Word.” Among the singers and songs in season two are Rod Stewart with “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” Jennifer Hudson with “I'll Follow the Sun,” Regina Spektor with “And Your Bird Can Sing,” Tori Kelly with “I'm Happy Just to Dance With You” and Of Monsters and Men with “Eleanor Rigby.” The Beat Bugs will also perform their own versions of various Beatles songs, including “Help!,” “Come Together,” “Penny Lane,” “Yellow Submarine,” “Strawberry Fields Forever,” “Hello Goodbye” and “Across the Universe.”

A 27-track two-disc soundtrack album for the first season will be released exclusively to Apple Music the day of the show's Aug. 3 premiere. The first season soundtrack, plus a “Best Of” compilation of seasons 1 and 2, will be released on CD on Nov. 4. The full soundtrack for the show's second season will be released in November 2016. More details on the second season soundtrack will be shared in the future, Netflix said.

The series is directed and written by Josh Wakely, and produced by his production company, Grace: A Storytelling Company, in conjunction with Beyond Screen Production and Thunderbird. Wakely also announced today he is working on another animated children's musical series, not yet titled, that will be based on the Motown catalog with Smokey Robinson as executive producer. It will based around an eight-year-old boy named Ben and feature music by Marvin Gaye, the Jackson 5, Lionel Richie, The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and others.
