It’s no secret that John Varvatos is rock and roll’s most loyal fashion fan.

From the countless leather biker jackets and pinstriped vests to combat boots and ripped henleys, the menswear designer has been largely responsible for translating music’s biggest fashion hits for today’s music artists and other entertainers (see his seminal tome, John Varvatos: Rock in Fashion, for further proof).

This was again apparent at his spring 2017 show, held Thursday at a downstairs jazz lounge at the Roxy Hotel in TriBeCa. Actor Kellan Lutz was dressed in a smart navy blazer and buttoned-up vest, paired with white jeans, a T-shirt and dark leather boots. Singer Travis Mills donned an olive-hued biker jacket with an unbuttoned henley. Rapper Machine Gun Kelly went full-on Varvatos with a pinstriped suit, leopard print scarf and nothing else, save for a full chest of tattoos and a fist full of rings. The Roadies actor did a special fitting with the designer at his showroom the day before the show.

The collection itself was decidedly less rock 'n' roll, though. The Parisian-inspired bar provided an apt setting for looks that the designer described as “Urban Romantic” and included softly structured linen jackets, many paired with white denim, neutral suede outerwear and separates done in a soothing gray palette. Many of the signature Varvatos details such as military coats, button detailing and neck scarves were still there but in softer versions.

Varvatos inevitably brought the night back to rock 'n' roll -- and to his CBGB-tombed Bowery shop -- at his afterparty, which included a performance by Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown. The party also served as a launch for the designer’s new fragrance, Dark Rebel Rider, which he calls “iconic, timeless and represents a courageous attitude.” In scent, so it was in the collection.
