Ludovico Einaudi playing in the Arctic Ocean in Svalbard, Norway on June 16, 2016 for Greenpeace.

One of the most moving things within the overall awe-inspiring video Ludovico Einaudi’s new Greenpeace-produced clip is the look of blessed disbelief on the pianist’s face as he looks at the surrounding landscape before he turns to the keyboard and begins to play his “Elegy for the Arctic.”

Einaudi is sitting at the piano on a wooden iceberg-shaped platform in the Arctic Ocean, in front of the Wahlenbergbreen glacier in Svalbard, Norway.

He was taken there by the ship Greenpeace Arctic Sunrise to make his musical plea for the environment, timed to coincide with this week’s meeting of OSPAR, which will attempt to decide on an agreement that would create a protected zone in the Arctic’s international waters.

Surrounded by water where there was once ice in a place that Greenpeace cites as “one of the most spectacular deteriorations caused by climate change,” Einaudi's performance is accompanied by the sound of pieces of the glacier falling into the sea.

“I’ve been about to see the purity and fragileness of this area with my own eyes and perform a song that I composed on the best stage in the world,” Einaudi said through a statement from Greenpeace Spain, which posted the video. “It is important that we understand the importance of the Arctic, [and] stop its process and protect it.”

Elements, the most recent album by the acclaimed crossover artist and film and television music composer, hit no. 7 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart; it rose to no. 3 on the Classical Albums chart.
