Highlights of the solo piano tour Ben Folds embarked on earlier this year have been assembled into "Ben Folds Live," a 17-track single disc album due Oct. 8 via Epic. The first 100,000 copies of the album will be shipped with a bonus DVD disc with 35 minutes of live footage captured during the tour.
"The shows felt pretty special from the onset -- I had never done a solo piano tour before -- so we quickly mobilized 8 tracks of portable recording equipment and recorded nearly every show," Folds said in a statement.
Along with well-known cuts as "Brick" and "Army" from his former band, Ben Folds Five, is a cover of Elton John's "Tiny Dancer." Also featured are several songs from Folds' first solo album, last year's "Rockin' the Suburbs," including "Zak and Sara" and "Not the Same."
The recordings come from a dozen different stops on the tour, which stretched from February through July. At four, the June 13 stop at New York's Roseland Ballroom yielded the most songs for the album, including a performance of "Fred Jones Part 2" that featured Cake lead singer John McCrea.
Audience participation on several cuts is also included. "I conducted them to sing harmonies and we incorporated that into the record where we could," Folds added.
The artist will support "Ben Folds Live" with a U.S. tour that kicks off Oct. 10 in Englewood, N.J., and is currently slated to last through to a Nov. 3 conclusion in Walla Walla, Wash. Prior to the stateside run, Folds will on Thursday (Sept. 26) kick off a short tour of Ireland and England in Dublin.
