Missy Elliott Stars in Marc Jacobs' Fall 2016 Campaign

Each season we look forward to the surprise of who Marc Jacobs will select to star in his new campaign. He never fails to delight with his choices, whether it’s Winona Ryder, Cher or Miley Cyrus. His fall 2016 ad lineup is no exception. That’s because none other than Missy Elliott is making her MJ debut.

Elliot, who he refers to as "Supa Dupa Fly," looks like she could take off in her ensemble, which features feathers, sequins and a puffy coat. Of the singer, Jacobs says he is "in continued awe of Missy’s ability to push the boundaries of the style of music both to the eye and to the ear." His dream came true in this shoot, since he’s been a major fan since 1997 and owes his happy, energetic team to her music keeping them going.

 

MISSY, Supa Dupa Fly From the moment I heard, The Rain, back in 1997, I was entranced by the genius rhythms and brilliant rhymes of Missy Elliott. Missy’s music has kept me and my design team happily energized through countless weekdays, weeknights and weekends during those long hours of sketching, fitting, styling and doing looks. In addition to the boundless energy of her music are the visually pulsating and wildly cartoon-like music videos she made in collaboration with the talented and visionary, Hype Williams. I am in continued awe of Missy’s ability to push the boundaries of the style of music both to the eye and to the ear. It was a dream of mine to work with her and I'm happy to share this portrait by David Sims for our Fall '16 campaign.

On Tuesday the designer began rolling out a series of portraits of individuals who, in an Instagram post, he said "represent a collective embodiment of love, honesty, integrity, courage, strength, curiosity and inspiration. Together, as one story, this collection is a reminder to question and challenge normal and to continue exploring and pushing boundaries."

 

 

In a continuing series of portraits for our Fall 2016 ad campaign, the individuals in these photographs represent a collective embodiment of love, honesty, integrity, courage, strength, curiosity and inspiration. Together, as one story, this collection is a reminder to question and challenge normal and to continue exploring and pushing boundaries. To quote Lana Wachowski, “I am suspicious of everything connected to that word [normal]. It is, to my thinking, a politically correct euphemism for obedience and conformity.” GENESIS P-ORRIDGE, Unconditional Love Through music, poetry and art, Genesis continues to explore, shape shift and define what it means to give love, be loved and live love. With that he introduced his first campaign star, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, who was photographed by David Sims and styled by Katie Grand. Of the English singer-songwriter and performance artist, who identifies as third gender, Jacobs said, "Through music, poetry and art, Genesis continues to explore, shape shift and define what it means to give love, be loved and live love."

 

 

In this way, Jacobs introduced the rest of the personalities featured in the ads, all shot by Sims. Sissy Spacek is another boldface name who appears in the dark, slightly haunting series wearing a luxe fur-collar coat. The designer refers to her as a "Gentle Heroine," recalling that he was 13 when he first saw her in the film Carrie. "Sissy’s character (that type of girl) is a reoccurring artistic reference in my work. The life she brings to all the characters she has portrayed as an artist is ever expanding, evolving and inspiring."
