Andra Day performs during her ACL Live taping on June 12, 2016.

“I truly believe our voices are so much more powerful as one.”

Performing in a taping for the PBS music series Austin City Limits, Andra Day dedicated her song “Rise Up” to the victims and their families of the recent nightclub shooting in Orlando. The singer/songwriter performed the song's uplifting lyrics of coming together in spite of the horrific events to rise up as one.

Day led the crowd in joining in on the chorus of her song in solidarity with those affected by the massacre. “We can lift up our voices and our hearts in such a way that their families and the people in Orlando and just around the country affected by this, will, for a moment at least, feel some type of comfort,” the singer said onstage Sunday night. “I truly believe our voices are so much more powerful as one.”

The massacre at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, took the lives of 49 victims, injuring 53, in the early hours of Sunday morning. The attack has been reported as the deadliest mass shooting and biggest terror attack in the U.S. since 9/11.

“We were all brokenhearted when we heard it,” Day told the crowd. “How soon will it be before we realize that hate and anger and revenge are the least powerful forces in the universe, and that love is the only all powerful force that conquers all?”

Day's episode of Austin City Limits will air on PBS in October.
