Apple Developing Siri Speaker to Compete With Amazon Echo: Report

Apple is reportedly developing its own Siri-based home speaker that will rival Amazon's Echo and Google's upcoming Home. 

Voice Tech, Long in Development, Is Coming Together All at Once

According to The Information, the new device will be preceded by Apple opening Siri to third-party developers in order to encourage other apps to interface with the voice assistant. This step in Apple's mounting voice technology advancements may come as soon as June, with the speaker following later. 

Google Announces Home, A Competitor to Amazon's Echo

The Siri speaker has been in development since before the Echo's release, the report states. It is expected to interact with home features supported by Apple's HomeKit platform for functions such as turning appliances on and off. 

Tech companies are putting a new emphasis on artificial intelligence assistants and home devices. Amazon's Echo has been the market leader since its release last year. But the market is soon to get more crowded. Last week Google announced its own AI assistant and home speaker, called Google Assistant and Google Home respectively.
