Josh Devine knows how to take a tragedy and turn it into s thing of beauty. The One Direction live drummer is back with a new single, "Never Fade," inspired by the death of a friend, who he pays tribute to alongside songwriter/producer and frequent collaborator Ollie Green.

The emotional track from the pair who first worked together on Devine's debut EP, 2015's Through The Fire, packs a heavy lyrical punch thanks to their mutual desire to honor someone's memory.

"The writing process for 'Never Fade' for me was heavily influenced by the death of my close friend," Devine told Billboard. "Ollie had the idea to write a song about missing someone, and I have wanted to write a song about the passing of my friend for a while, it was just the perfect time. It wrote itself, the lyrics just came so naturally to us, it was heartfelt and we both knew exactly what direction it was going from the start."

Drummer/singer Devine got his break when he worked with 1D on their first live performance following their third-place finish on The X Factor in 2010. He then joined their live band full-time and toured with them until their hiatus began in January. Green, who has produced remixes for Lady Gaga and Carly Rae Jepsen and worked with a number of acts including Gorgon City and Gavin James, met Devine during a 1D show and their connection was immediate.

You can hear it on "Fade," which features their touching lyrics about a lost friend over subtle strings and haunting piano accompaniment. "Cause you grew wings too soon/ Can you hear me/ I'm tired of saying I'll see you soon/ How I wish it could be true."

Devine feels the song captures some of the feelings and thoughts he had while coming to terms with his friend's passing. "The sleepless nights hoping that he was somewhere out there listening, the missing, the questions, the pain, the hope and the memories that will never fade," he said.
