Adele Named U.K.'s Wealthiest Female Musician
Adele’s ridiculously successful comeback has thrust her into the ranks of music’s biggest money makers.
The Londoner has been named as Britain's richest ever female musician, having amassed a fortune of £85 million ($122 million), according to the newly published Sunday Times Rich List.
The singer’s finances improved by £35 million ($50 million) on the previous year, thanks in no small part to the November 2015 release of 25, which by January this year had surpassed 15 million global sales and the following month moved past the 8 million U.S. sales milestone.
Adele is ranked No. 30 on the Sunday Times’ music list, which identifies the top 50 music millionaires in the U.K. and Ireland, up from 43rd place last time and ahead of the likes of Cliff Richard, Gary Barlow, Ronnie Wood and Kylie Minogue.
Adele also leads the Young Music Rich List for the fifth successive year, a chart which covers success stories aged 30 and under.
However, she’s not the biggest-earning female singer on the list. That honor goes to Irishwoman Enya, whose fortune was estimated at £91 million ($130 million). Like Adele, Enya released a comeback album last year, Dark Sky Island.
Beatles great Paul McCartney and his wife Nancy Shevell top the annual list with £760 million ($1.09 billion), ahead of Andrew Lloyd-Webber with £715 million ($1.02 billion). The top five is rounded out by some familiar faces: U2 at No. 3 with £500 million ($717 million), Elton John at No. 4 with £280 million ($401 million) and Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger at No. 5 with £235 million ($337 million).
Members of Britain's most popular legacy bands, from Led Zeppelin to Queen and Pink Floyd, also make the list while the family of the late, great David Bowie comes in at No. 29 with a fortune of £90 million ($129 million).
