Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, R.E.M.'s Mike Mills and Others Confirmed for Big Star Tribute
Tweedy's bandmate Pat Sansone, Ira Kaplan of Yo La Tengo, Robyn Hitchcock, Jon Auer of the Posies, Mitch Easter of Let’s Active, Chris Stamey of the dB’s, Dan Wilson of Semisonic, Benmont Tench from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Big Star's sole surviving original member Jody Stephens are also confirmed for the April 27 show, entitled Thank You, Friends: Big Star’s Third Live.
Concord Bicycle Music will present the one-off concert at the Alex Theatre in Glendale, CA where guests will be treated to renditions of the much-loved power-pop group’s classics such as “In the Street,” “September Gurls” and “Thirteen” and the Third album in its entirety.
The live program will be accompanied with a full chamber orchestra helmed by the Kronos Quartet which, according to organizers, will perform scores created directly from the original multi-track tapes from Ardent Studios. Carl Marsh, who wrote all the Third/Sister Lovers orchestrations, will conduct. It’ll all be shot for a DVD release to be directed by Yes Equals Yes and scheduled for release in Spring 2017.
The band's "dismal commercial failure, subsequent massive critical acclaim and enduring legacy" was told in the award-winning 2013 documentary Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me. Though together less than four years, Big Star had an influence on the likes of R.E.M., the Replacements, Elliot Smith and the Flaming Lips.
