Sony Classical Gears Up For Horowitz Celebration
Sony Classical will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of legendary pianist Vladimir Horowitz with a massive reissue campaign starting in late September.Sony Classical will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of legendary pianist Vladimir Horowitz with a massive reissue campaign starting in late September, Billboard Bulletin reports. The label will release a host of material on Sept. 30, including a revamped edition of Horowitz' famed 1965 "Return to Carnegie Hall" live concert recording, uncut for the first time. The three-disc set will include a DVD with previously unseen outtakes from the film "Vladimir Horowitz: The Last Romantic."
Also to be released Sept. 30 are the three-disc set "The Essential Horowitz," featuring highlights from the pianist's recording career. The same day, Sony will reissue 12 select titles from its Horowitz catalog.
Additionally, the Film Society of Lincoln Center will host a three-day Horowitz film festival Oct. 1-3 at New York's Walter Reade Theater, screening "The Last Romantic," "Horowitz Plays Mozart," "Horowitz In Moscow" and "Reminiscences" twice daily.
Born Oct. 1, 1903, in the Ukraine, Horowitz made his U.S. debut in 1928 at New York's Carnegie Hall. He recorded for RCA, CBS Masterworks and Sony. He died of a heart attack in 1989.
