Keith Caulfield answers readers' questions about Jennifer Lopez, "Gypsy" and several "American Idol" contestants.THIS IS JENNY... NOW
I want to ask you about Jennifer Lopez's latest album, "This Is Me ... Then." How many copies has it sold in the U.S and what's the highest position that it has achieved on The Billboard 200? Did the first single from this album, "Jenny From the Block" bow at No.1 on Billboard's Hot 100
Thank you for your time.
Jennifer Lopez's "This Is Me ... Then," debuted at No. 6 on The Billboard 200 in December 2002, and eventually peaked at No. 2. The Epic album has sold 2.4 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.
The set's first single, "Jenny From the Block," climbed to No. 3 on Billboard's Hot 100.
Lopez's current single, "Baby I Love U," is No. 8 on Billboard's Hot 100 Bubbling Under chart. It's the fourth single from "This Is Me ... Then."
I just want to know how many copies the "New Broadway Cast Recording" of "Gypsy" with Bernadette Peters has sold thus far. And which "Gypsy" album has been the most successful to date?
Thanks for responding,
The Broadway Angel "New Broadway Recording" of "Gypsy" with Bernadette Peters has sold about 9,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. The album debuted Sept. 6 at No. 175 on The Billboard 200.
Because most of the "Gypsy" related albums pre-date SoundScan's tracking era (1991-present), we only have a limited amount of sales information. Therefore, all numbers quoted here are for May 1991 to date.
The 1959 original broadway cast recording of "Gypsy," which starred Ethel Merman, has sold 79,000 copies in the U.S.
The film soundtrack, with Rosalind Russell, was released in 1962 and has since gone out of print. We do not have any sales information for this title.
In 1989, Tyne Daly starred in a Broadway revival of the show. That Nonesuch album has sold 26,000 copies in the SoundScan era. A year later, a remixed version of the 1973 London cast recording (with Angela Lansbury) not previously issued in America was released. It has since sold about 13,000 copies.
Finally, Bette Midler starred in the television movie "Gypsy," for which a companion album was released in 1993. It has sold 111,000.
Can you tell me how many copies of the American Idol CD's for Justin Guarini, Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken were sold so far to date?
Since its June release, Justin Guarini's self-titled RCA debut has sold 126,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. Guarini, of course, was runner-up to Kelly Clarkson in the first "American Idol" competition. Clarkson's "Thankful" set, also on RCA, has sold quite swiftly. It has moved 1.5 million units since it was released in April, when it debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200.
As for Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken, each has released one solo single. Studdard's "Flying Without Wings" has sold 674,000 copies to date, while Aiken's "This Is The Night" has shifted 874,000.
As previously reported by Billboard.com, Studdard's debut solo album, "Soulful," is due Nov. 11 via J Records. Aiken's as-yet-untitled RCA set is due Oct. 14.
