Organized by singer/actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, "Divas: Simply Singing!" raises funds for Project Angel Food and the Black AIDS Institute. First staged in 1991, the annual charity fundraiser has featured a long list of divas over the years, including Roberta Flack, Mary Wilson, Valerie Simpson, Chaka Khan, Teena Marie, Maureen McGovern, Melissa Manchester, Jane Olivor, Jody Watley, Tina Arena and Deborah Cox.
"Divas: Simply Singing!" creator Ralph recently finished a stint in the Broadway musical "Thoroughly Modern Millie." She was a Tony Award nominee for creating the role of Deena Jones in "Dreamgirls"; and her television roles include running parts in "Designing Women" and "Moesha."
Regarding her work on "Divas: Simply Singing!," Ralph says, "No one gets paid on this event. I depend upon the kindness of others to make this work. The set, the lights, the piano. The musical director, Diane Louie; producer Paul Papile; director Howard Fine; set designer Rob Allen; and, of course, the Divas are all there each and every year because they care and understand that, since there is no cure, prevention is very important for us all."
Tickets to the benefit are available at Ticketmaster or the event's Web site.
