Florence Welch of Florence + The Machine may not have won any Grammys this year, but it was still a big weekend for the singer-songwriter. She was announced on Friday as the brand ambassador of Gucci jewelry and timepieces, and appeared on the red carpet Monday dressed head-to-toe in the brand, which recently led a renaissance of opulent, maximalist fashion thanks to newly-appointed creative director Alessandro Michele.
It was the band’s 2015 album How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful that served as Michele’s soundtrack while he was designing Gucci’s groundbreaking spring collection. “He wanted to know the whole story behind the record,” Welch recalled on her first meeting with Michele, last year in New York. “We were supposed to meet and we got confused -- I went to his hotel and he went to mine -- and we actually passed each other on the street and checked out each other’s outfits. I saw this beautiful Renaissance Jesus, with his beard and all of this jewelry on. And I was wearing this pom pom coat and red flares, and we were both kind of like, ‘Ohhh.’”
