The Sales Domination of 'Frozen,' In One Chart
Staging the production will be Alex Timbers, who previously helped shape a Disney property into a theatrical vehicle as co-director of Peter and the Starcatcher. Known for his highly kinetic physical productions, Timbers' Broadway directing credits have also included Rocky, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson and The Pee-wee Herman Show, as well as the off-Broadway hit Here Lies Love. He is a writer and producer on the Amazon series Mozart in the Jungle.
Choreography on the Frozen musical will be by Peter Darling, a Tony winner for Billy Elliot, currently represented on Broadway with Matilda. Set and costume designer Bob Crowley has a long history with Disney Theatrical, having previously collaborated on Aida, Tarzan, Mary Poppins and Aladdin. Likewise lighting designer Natasha Katz, who worked on Aida, Tarzan, The Little Mermaid and Aladdin. Crowley and Katz won the most recent of their multiple Tony Awards last year for An American in Paris.
'Frozen' Musical Headed to Broadway
Sound design is by Peter Hylenski, with music supervision and vocal arrangements by two-time Tony winner Stephen Oremus (Wicked, The Book of Mormon).
Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen, Frozen follows a princess who sets off across an icy landscape to find her estranged sister, whose powers have locked the kingdom in eternal winter. The film is the highest-grossing animated feature in history, earning close to $1.3 billion worldwide, including more than $400 million domestic.
Disney's current Broadway shows consistently rank in the top five in weekly box office. The Lion King, which next year marks its 20th anniversary on Broadway, has grossed over $1.2 billion to date in New York alone. The more recent addition, Aladdin, has taken in $148.5 million since its spring 2014 opening. With its massive global brand recognition, beloved fairy-tale story and popular songs, Frozen has the potential to become another stage juggernaut.
Prior to reaching Broadway, the Frozen musical will have an out-of-town tryout in a city to be announced, beginning performances in summer 2017. Casting has not yet been set.
