In the latest installment of our video series “Fishing For Answers,” Kendrick Lamar hung out with Billboard alongside the Los Angeles River to answer questions from our fishbowl of queries. The 28-year-old rapper from Compton shared some little-known knowledge about himself, including who his greatest mentor is.

“I will say my mother,” he said of his mom Paula Oliver. And the greatest lesson he learned from her? “Let’s go all the way back to the simplest one: treat others the way you want to be treated and respected. And I say that because this is one that a lot of people tend to forget about more and more as you grow old.” 

When naming the artist he would most like to work with, Lamar kept it short and the point, “That’s easy, James Brown.”
