Kantner is the first of Jefferson Airplane's founding members to have passed away. He was also a founding member of the group's spinoff band, Jefferson Starship. which took off in 1974.  He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 1996 for his work with the group.

Slick fronted The Great Society, Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship and Starship and had various solo stints.

Mickey Hart from the Grateful Dead sent this quote to Billboard about Kantner: “He was kind of the backbone of that band. It was always about Grace and Jack and Jorma [Kaukonen]. I don’t think he got the credit he deserved. And they were powerful. They could blow the Grateful Dead off the stage at times. We always played really well when we played with the Airplane.”
