Originally released as a feature-length documentary film in 1989, "101" is a quasi-road film/live show that chronicles the staging and execution of a massive Depeche Mode concert at the Pasadena (Calif.) Rose Bowl. "101" is not a traditional concert film, as a good deal of the movie is about a group of fans selected to travel to the venue—think "Real World" crossed with Depeche Mode. The most enjoyable aspect of the DVD bow of "101" is an often amusing and fairly insightful audio commentary with the band and directors D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus. The two-disc set, presented in both Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and PCM Stereo, also benefits from a second DVD of extras.—KC
