Makeup Queen Amanda Steele's Coachella-Inspired Compilation Album 'Just Gets You Pumped Up'
Joey Bada$$ is one of the artists on just-released Heard Well project.
Everywhere you go, Amanda Steele is on your screen. The makeup teen queen began her rise to fame with the beauty and fashion vlog MakeupByMandy24. Since then, she's expanded into the online reality series The Social Life and a talk show, The Meet Up.
But Steele hasn't stopped yet: The L.A. native found time between her fashion-week duties, CoverGirl contract and convention appearances to curate a compilation album for fellow YouTuber Connor Franta's label Heard Well. The album, Gateway, dropped Friday (Oct. 30).
"I’ve definitely always loved music and I’m really into it even though I can’t make my own -- I’m not talented in that way," Steele tells Billboard. "I’m really passionate about it and I feel like it was a great project for me.”
The album is an array of hip-hop, rap and electronic music -- something Steele didn't expect. "What was surprising about making this album was that I was thinking it would be completely hip-hop and rap, but then once the final track list came together, I realized that there were a lot of electronic songs. It’s a good mix of all of those."
So how did the mix come to be? It comes down to Heard Well's suggestions and Coachella. "I actually had people from Heard Well send in some undiscovered artists to me so I can listen to new stuff and see what I might like," Steele explains. "I think the whole electronic part of my album was influenced by [Coachella] too. I was never really into it, and then I remember going to Coachella and going to a stage that played that kind of music, and it was so fun to dance to and be around and blast, and that’s how I started liking that kind of music.”
While YouTube peer Lohanthony also released a compilation album through Heard Well earlier this year, the 16-year-old makeup vlogger didn't go to him for advice because she wanted to honor their differences. With the exception of established names like Joey Bada$$ and Tink, the artists on Gateway are mostly up-and-comers with the potential to cross over into mainstream success -- and Steele likes it that way. "I want to find new things that I haven’t listened to yet so I can share it with other people."
For fans of and new-comers to the MakeupByMandy24 empire, this album is a chance to get to know her even better -- and as the YouTube darling herself said, it's perfect to get ready to (maybe while watching one of her tutorials). "It just gets you pumped up."
