Miley Cyrus says newly out Olympic medalist Gus Kenworthy is her "hero" and that she's never been prouder to call him "my friend."

Kenworthy, who won the silver medal in freestyle skiing at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, came out as gay publicly on the cover of the latest ESPN The Magazine. The 24-year-old athlete has been a professional freeskier since he was 16 and has been friends with Cyrus for some time.

Cyrus wrote in a Facebook post that Kenworthy is "showing all of us what it means to be courageous and PROUD of who we are! You have won so much more than any medal ... You have won FREEDOM!"
