Jay Z stopped by to discuss the gig on Jimmy Kimmel’s late night talk show, which is currently filming a week of shows from Brooklyn. Though the artist and entrepreneur had a big surprise for everyone in the house; they were all invited to walk on down and enjoy the show.
Viewers at home were treated to a performance of Jay Z’s 2009 hit “Empire State Of Mind” and the new collaboration from Usher and Nas “Chains,” a song that addresses racial injustice and police brutality and was released last week through Tidal.
Other performers on the bill included T.I., Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Meek Mill, Thomas Rhett, Indochine, Nick Jonas, Alessia Cara, Justine Skye, and Damian Marley who, it was announced, has become one of Tidal's artist-owners.
Proceeds from the concert will be donated to organizations "dedicated to advancing positive community relations and effecting systemic change for the development and sustainability of just societies, this inaugural event’s philanthropic focus." The disbursement of the funds will be overseen by The New World Foundation, a New York-based organization which partners with various philanthropic initiatives. Ticket sales reportedly raised around $1 million.
