We're used to stories of unhappy kids naively running away from home, but what happens when it's the parents that run away?

In Vanessa Carlton's video for her latest song "Operator," which premieres on Billboard below, we see that life without parents can turn into kids taking on impossible responsibilities -- while also sneaking into Maseratis and eating ice cream sundaes for dinner.

The video, which was directed by Daniel Henry and filmed in Nashville, features real-life siblings and their mother. Carlton gave Billboard some insight on the video's concept.

"Daniel basically reversed the age-old story of kids running away and instead had the parents run away," Carlton said. "The kids are left to do what they want in this big house. The older sister takes charge the best she can. It's done in a cinematic and slightly abstract way."

The song itself, however, has a slightly different backstory. Instead of parents running away from their children, it's a story about an older woman taking advantage of a younger man, according to Carlton. He follows her every move as she lures him away from his family.

"She 'operates' the way things happen around her to benefit herself," Carlton adds. "That's what operators do. Also, the song happens to be about a woman and a boy but it could easily be the story of two women or two men.”

"Operator" is one of the songs featured on Vanessa Carlton's upcoming album Liberman, out Oct. 23. You can pre-order the album here.
