Seventeen-year-old cancer patient Emary Langhorn is “saying a prayer” that she’ll get the chance to meet one of her favorite artists, Taylor Swift – and Laura Jane Grace (of the punk rock band Against Me!) is trying to help make that happen.

“I know you're busy Taylor, but I'd trade any favor I could,” Grace tweeted at Swift on Monday, Sept. 21. In her message to Swift, she shared a video of Langhorn that had been uploaded by the University of Kansas Hospital.

“Hi, Taylor. I’m Emary, and I would really like to get the chance to meet you,” Langhorn says at the start of the clip, which can be seen below. “I’ve had a really long battle, and you’ve always been a way for me and my friends to smile and look on the positive side. I’d really like to get the chance to say thank you, and to get to smile and laugh and talk with you.”

Langhorn was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in Feb. 2013, after visiting countless doctors. An MRI scan eventually showed a softball-sized tumor in her chest. She had started experiencing chest pain during her freshman year of high school. “It was pain to where I’d be at the movies with my friends and call my mom crying, and she’d have to pick me up because I couldn’t even sit up anymore,” she says in the video.

In Sept. 2013, she was told she was cancer-free – but she relapsed within 90 days. “It’s been quite a journey,” Langhorn, who has now undergone two bone marrow transplants, says. “The ultimate goal has always been the same: to get me cancer-free.”

Langhorn remains positive. The tumor is “now grape-sized,” she reveals.

“I have my moments of not feeling good. I kind of just like to take everything one day and one smile at a time. That’s kind of been my line throughout this,” she says.

The teen had plans to go to her school’s homecoming dance and to see Swift in concert on the singer’s 1989 tour. Unfortunately, she had to miss both experiences, as her most recent bone marrow transplant was scheduled for a date that was sooner than expected. Now, she’s hoping that Swift will see her story.

“I like her whole aura,” she says of Swift. “She’s confident and she’s proud to be who she is. She’s proud to be a girl – and I’m very proud to be a girl. There’s just a lightness to her all the time that I just really appreciate. I like to be light and smiley, and I feel like that’s who she is. She’s a great role model for that reason.”

Her mother agrees: “What Taylor Swift emulates is very much like my daughter. These are very driven, very confident women who are very grateful to be alive, and they live in that gratefulness every day.”

“Emery is a special young woman, and has been since she was a very little girl,” she adds. “She’s never seen color, she’s never seen size and she’s never seen age. People are people.”

“Let’s all say a little prayer that something BIG will happen,” Langhorn tweeted.
