2 Chainz, Nas, Questlove & More Artists React to Bree Newsome Removing South Carolina Confederate Flag

Activist Brittany “Bree” Newsome was arrested on Saturday, June 27, after taking down the Confederate flag in front of the statehouse in Columbia, S.C. -- and many artists are joining the conversation about her act with the hashtag #FreeBree on Twitter and Instagram.

Confederate Flag in Popular Music: A Recent History

“You come against me with hatred, oppression and violence. I come against you in the name of God. This flag comes down today,” Newsome can be heard saying in video footage of her climb up the 30-foot flagpole.

Newsome and fellow activist James Tyson, who was waiting to help her at the bottom of the flagpole, have been charged with defacing a monument, according to CNN. The flag was raised again less than an hour later. Newsome’s act occurred hours before a pro-flag rally was was scheduled to take place.
