“You come against me with hatred, oppression and violence. I come against you in the name of God. This flag comes down today,” Newsome can be heard saying in video footage of her climb up the 30-foot flagpole.

Newsome and fellow activist James Tyson, who was waiting to help her at the bottom of the flagpole, have been charged with defacing a monument, according to CNN. The flag was raised again less than an hour later. Newsome’s act occurred hours before a pro-flag rally was was scheduled to take place.
