After seducing audiences at this year’s South by Southwest and earning himself comparisons to Sam Cooke and Otis Redding, Fort Worth-based soul singer Leon Bridges has released "River," the first single from his forthcoming debut LP, and it is a seriously beautiful four-minute listening experience.
The song starts off with soft guitar acoustics, which are quickly permeated by Bridges’ captivatingly smooth vocals. His melodies flow as unrestrained as the river about which he gorgeously croons. The track is a humble showcase of the nostalgic soulfulness that belies Bridges’ young age (he is only 25), employing only backing vocals and the gentle percussion of a tambourine. If “River” is any hint at what the rest of the record will offer, it will no doubt be the first step in his journey to joining the ranks of the soul greats.
