With musical roles in Mamma Mia! and Into the Woods, we know by now Meryl Streep can hold her own belting out a number or two. But never have we gotten her singing such modern hits as now, with her new film Ricki and the Flash

In the movie, Streep plays the frontwoman of a cover band who leaves her family to chase her rock and roll dreams. She'll be singing 12 hit covers, including Tom Petty’s "American Girl," Bruce Springsteen's "My Love Will Not Let You Down" and "Bad Romance" by Lady Gaga, which were all recorded in front of a live audience.

Rick Springfield Joins Meryl Streep's Band in 'Ricki and the Flash'

"We didn’t use playback," director Jonathan Demme has revealed to press. "We're not sweetening it up on the soundtrack. It's performance! I have to say with our band -- I shouldn't say it, but I want to say what I feel in my heart -- Ricki and the Flash blow away every original."

As previously reported, Streep will get some real rock star support in the film, courtesy of Rick Springfield. The "Jessie's Girl" singer will play a band member who has a crush on Streep's character, showing off his guitar playing in the process.
