A trailer for the upcoming Bessie Smith biopic, starring Queen Latifah, is out, giving viewers a sneak peek at the 20's-set flick and in all its drama-filled glory before it premieres on HBO next month. 

Bessie focuses on Smith's personal and professional lives during which she became one of the most most successful recording artists of the era, before dying in a car accident at 43 in 1937. In addition to giving a first look at the plot, the trailer also features some of the music recorded for the film, showing off Latifah's own vocal chops.

Directed by Dee Rees, the film also stars Mo'Nique, Bryan Greenberg, Michael Kenneth Williams, Khandi Alexander, Tory Kittles, Mike Epps, Oliver Platt and Charles S. Dutton.

The film will debut on HBO on May 16.
