Sinead O'Connor Won't Sing 'Nothing Compares 2 U' Again
Sinead O'Connor has announced that she will not perform her biggest hit, "Nothing Compares 2 U," as she no longer "emotionally" identifies with the song.
The Prince-penned song was a worldwide smash in 1990, not least for its arresting black and white single shot video, and is also O'Connor's biggest hit, but she said that after 25 years of singing it, she recently realized that she wasn't able to bring the same level emotion to her performance of the song.
In a short Facebook post, O'Connor said that her training as singer precluded her from singing songs that she didn't emotionally identify with. O'Connor said she was writing the post to warn her fans that she won't sing the song and not to expect when she performs.
The Irish singer became notorious in the U.S. following an incident on Saturday Night Live in 1992 when she ripped up a picture of Pope John Paul II in protest against allegations of child sex abuse in the Catholic Church. O'Connor also got into a high-profile Twitter spat with Miley Cyrusafter warning the "Wrecking Ball" against flaunting her sexuality.
O'Connor's full Facebook post said the following:
OK, the time has come for me to cease singing Nothing Compares 2U. The first principle of the manner in which I'm trained as a singer (Bel Canto) is we never sing a song we don't emotionally identify with. After twenty-five years of singing it, nine months or so ago I finally ran out of anything I could use in order to bring some emotion to it. I don't want audiences to be disappointed coming along to a show and then not hearing it, so am letting you know here that you won't. If I were to sing it just to please people, I wouldn't be doing my job right, because my job is to be emotionally available. I'd be lying. You'd be getting a lie. My job is to give you honesty. I'm trained in honesty. I can't act. It just isn't in my training. I have ceased singing other songs over the years for the same reason.
