Paul Dano and John Cusack play Beach Boys founder Brian Wilson at two different stages of his life in the trailer for the biopic Love & Mercy. The movie, which was acquired by Lionsgate/Roadside Attractions after its Toronto Film Festival premiere, chronicles Wilson's struggles with mental health and substance abuse issues.

The clip opens with a young Wilson (played by Dano) in the studio as he says he's "going to make the greatest album ever madeā€¦got all kinds of new ideas, new sounds, new instruments."

Later, after someone is heard telling him he can't just do whatever he wants, Dano's Wilson is heard saying he's "got different stuff inside of me. I got to get it out."

That's followed by a voice-over about Wilson being "a very sick man," with Dano's version of the musician fading into Cusack's older version, in the '80s at the point when Wilson meets his second wife Melinda Ledbetter (Elizabeth Banks). Wilson and Ledbetter are shown together toward the end of the trailer, with Ledbetter heard saying, "You need to find a way to get back to yourself."

The preview is set to the Beach Boys classic "God Only Knows." Paul Giamatti co-stars as Wilson's personal physician and legal guardian Eugene Landy.

Love & Mercy marks the feature directorial debut of veteran producer/financier Bill Pohlad, of River Road Entertainment (12 Years a Slave, Into the Wild). Oren Moverman and Michael Alan Lerner wrote the screenplay.

Pohlad, Claire Rudnick Polstein and John Wells produced the film. Ann Ruark, Jim Lefkowitz and Moverman served as executive producers.

The film is set to hit theaters on June 5.
