Rapper Nate Dogg, singer Mya and Papa Roach frontman Jacoby Shaddix joined McKnight and Sandoval in providing solo vocal tracks to "Forever in Our Hearts," the majority of which was recorded on Sunday at Los Angeles' NRG Studios.
As previously reported, the project is spearheaded by Godhead frontman Jason Miller, who wrote the song as a tribute to the victims of the tragedy and put the call out for help in assembling the track. He is being assisted by producer Jay Baumgardner (Papa Roach, Helmet) and engineers Dan Certa and Sergio Chavez.
Miller and fellow Godhead member Mike Miller recorded guitar parts for the song, as did former Evanescence member Ben Moody, Trapt's Simon Ormandy and Michael "Fish" Herring (Prince, Anastacia). Bass contributions came from 311's P-Nut, Papa Roach's Tobin Esperance and Marty O'Brien (Disturbed, Kelly Clarkson). Drumming was provided by A Perfect Circle's Josh Freese and Stephen Perkins (Jane's Addiction, Infectious Grooves). Ben Jelen added keyboards and violins.
Also on hand to lend voices to the chorus were former Sixpence None The Richer singer Leigh Nash, Extreme's Nuno Bettencourt and Gary Cherone, SR-71's Mitch Allan, singer/songwriter Keaton Simmons and members of Static X, Lit, Veruca Salt and Adema. Also chiming in were actors Eric Roberts, Ming Na, Roselyn Sanchez, John Cho, Corey Feldman, Andrew Bryniarski and Kelly Hu.
Still more solo voices will be recorded this week, according to Miller. "I'm still holding three more vocal slots," he says, "and I am waiting to hear back from a number of people we've approached or who have contacted us to take part."
"Forever in Our Hearts" will be released via Apple's iTunes music store as soon as it is completed, with proceeds funneled to Red Cross relief efforts through the Linkin Park-founded charity Music for Relief. A music video constructed of footage from the recording sessions is also being assembled.
