Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga Talk Taking Advice From Cab Drivers and Strippers
Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga stopped by The Tonight Show to talk with Jimmy Fallon about their recent duets project, Cheek To Cheek, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Fallon asked each singer if they had ever taken advice from an opinionated stranger. Both artists had: Bennett acted on the suggestion of a New York taxi driver, while Gaga suggested she might have taken the advice of an aged Atlanta stripper. Watch the interview below.
Bennett's story fits closely with his image as an authentic crooner who's never far from his tuxedo. In a cab "years ago," the taxi driver complained that "entertainers are lousy" because of a newfangled piece of modern technology: the microphone. This led Bennett to include an un-amplified vocal portion in his sets.
Gaga's tale begins with the singer "on a date at a strip club in Atlanta," where "a 65- to 70-year-old woman [was] stripping to 'Poker Face.'" The stripper, who didn't realize she was talking Gaga, offered thoughts on the singer's career. "If [Lady Gaga] just took all her clothes off and she just sang, she would be great."
Presumably her next piece of advice was to record an album of jazz duets.
