Sam Smith on Coming Out: 'My Aim Is to Tell People How Good It's Been for Me'

Sam Smith covers the Out100 20th Anniversary issue.

Out magazine named Sam Smith the breakout of the year, and the "Stay With Me" singer took the opportunity to open up about his coming out experience.

"My aim is to tell people how good it’s been for me so that, hopefully, gay men or parents with gay children can look at my story and think, 'Wow, that’s how it should be. That’s what we can work towards.' That’s been my whole motive -- to not make it a talking point. My music should be a talking point. My voice should be a talking point," Smith tells the magazine.

Sam Smith: 'I'll Be Excited When I Get My Heart Broken Properly'

Earlier this year, Smith revealed in an interview with The Fader his album was written about a man that broke his heart.

"In the Lonely Hour' is about a guy that I fell in love with last year, and he didn’t love me back," he said at the time.
