The Alabama native pulled in a commanding 61% of 6,823 votes cast.
In second place was Carrie Underwood, with 30%, with Vonzell Solomon running a distant third with just 9%.
The field will be whittled to two finalists when results of this week's public vote are revealed on tonight's (May 18) episode of the Fox talent competition. Last night's performance episode featured a guest judge in music mogul/BMG North America CEO Clive Davis, whose company will sign the winner to a recording contract.
Each contestant performed three songs -- one chosen by Davis, one of their own choosing and one picked by the trio of "Idol" judges -- during last night's show. Bice opened the broadcast with the Elton John/Bernie Taupin classic "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" at Davis' suggestion, while judge Paula Abdul chose for him the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction."
For his own pick, Bice delivered an a capella rendition of Badlands' "In a Dream" that led notoriously prickly judge Simon Cowell to comment he "may have put 34 musicians out of work," referring to the show's house band.
Davis chose Roy Orbison's "Crying" for Underwood, while judge Randy Jackson picked Shania Twain's "Man, I Feel Like a Woman" and she settled on Air Supply's "Out of Nothing at All." For Solomon, Davis gave her Dionne Warwick's "I'll Never Love This Way Again," Cowell provided Donna Summer's "On the Radio" and she challenged herself with Aretha Franklin's "Chain of Fools."
The fourth-season "American Idol" finale will be held next week, with performances on Tuesday (May 24) and the coronation of the winner the following night.
