Exclusive: Listen to Oliver's 'Light Years Away'
Oliver is an electronic production duo from Los Angeles that, perhaps more than any rising DJ outfit, is poised to have an utterly explosive fall. Made up of Vaughn Oliver (U-Tern) and Oliver Goldstein (Oligee), their sound is funky, menacing, and fiercely energetic, and a cool alternative for those who are tired of trendy trap and big room EDM.
Their new two-track EP, “Light Years Away,” is out today on Fool’s Gold, the label founded by DJ A-Trak and Nick Catchdubs in 2007. You can listen to the title song here first on Billboard.
It’s a windows-down tune. The pair envision fans listening to it on the road, “driving to Vegas, Hunter S. Thompson-style,” but if you’re not bound for Sin City, cranking it on the way home from a sci-fi movie will suffice, they said.
Their sound can be described as a space-age blend of eighties hip hop and French techno, derived from years of studying producers like Busy P and Justice.
"Basically it's the soundtrack to Neil Degrasse Tyson's first ayahuasca experience if he was 20-years-old and played keyboards in a funk band,” Vaughn Oliver said. "It's also about leaving things behind on earth and not looking back."
Plenty of dance music’s heavy hitters are along for the ride. The duo spent this spring on tour with Chromeo, is co-managed and mentored by Hard Events boss Gary Richards, and boasts tracks with Alex Metric and A-Trak. And Dillon Francis' remix of their song “Night is On My Mind” has clocked more than a million plays on SoundCloud.
