Drinking Coffee May Reduce Hearing Loss, Says New Study

Good news for coffee guzzling concertgoers: Your caffeine intake may help reduce the risk of hearing loss later in life. That is, if you're a woman.

According to a new study, "Higher caffeine intake was associated with a lower risk of incident tinnitus in women." The study tracked 65,085 women ages 30 to 44 -- of those women, 5,289 eventually developed tinnitus.

Additionally, the more caffeine a woman consumed each day, the less likely she was to develop tinnitus.

Women who consumed 450 to 599 milligrams of caffeine a day -- approximately the amount in three to four 8 oz. cups of coffee -- were 15 percent less likely to experience hearing loss. And women who consumed more than 600 milligrams of caffeine a day were 21 percent less likely to develop tinnitus. The study monitored total caffeine intake -- including soda, tea, chocolate, etc. -- and controlled for other hearing problems aside from tinnitus.

The lead author of the study, Dr. Jordan T. Glicksman of the University of Western Ontario, made sure to specify this isn't proof of anything: "We can’t conclude that caffeine is a cure for tinnitus."

Still, the numbers are compelling. If you're a woman in a band, a frequenter of metal concerts or just someone blaring music from your earbuds 24/7, this is just another reason to have that extra cup of coffee.
