Bass Drum of Death, 'Left for Dead': Exclusive Song Premiere

Oxford, Miss. garage-rock band Bass Drum of Death was once the solo project of John Barrett, a former Fat Possum employee who in his spare time made demos fueled by swaggering guitars and rough-hewn drums, his voice emerging from the wreckage of noise like a driver from a smoldering pileup. Despite -- or perhaps because of -- his scrappy self-production, Barrett's songs have appeared in video games (Grand Theft Auto VGran Turismo 6), ad campaigns (H&M, Nascar), and on TV (BBC).

Rip This, due Oct. 7 via Innovative Leisure and BDoD's first proper studio album, was produced by Jacob Portrait, bassist for BDoD's former tourmate Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Barrett also brought on drummer Len Clark as a full-time band member and collaborator. The first listen of the record, the song "Left For Dead," retains the band's raw power while clarifying it, sharpening the edges of Barrett's tightly coiled guitar runs. "With this record we wanted to clean it up a bit, but without losing the grit and visceral qualities of the first two LPs," Barrett tells Billboard. "We recorded everything live to tape, just with much better gear this time around."
