"Horses Horses" features the original album on disc one and a B-side cover of the Who's "My Generation. The second disc includes a recent performance of the entire set, plus "My Generation," at the Smith-curated Meltdown Festival.
That show was taped June 25 at London's Royal Festival Hall and featured an expanded Patti Smith Band bolstered by Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea and Television guitarist Tom Verlaine.
Produced by the Velvet Underground's John Cale, "Horses" was the first major-label album spawned from New York's famed punk scene of the 1970s and the first to make a commercial breakthrough, reaching No. 47 on The Billboard 200.
Smith quickly became influential as much for her poetry-infused, highly personal rock'n'roll as for her refusal to make her gender an issue amid a male-dominated music scene. Along the way, she has influenced scores of artists, from R.E.M. and Polly Jean Harvey to the Yeah Yeah Yaahs' Karen O.
Smith and company are on tour in Europe through a Sept. 6 show in Reykjavik.
