Richard Marx, 'Beautiful Goodbye': Exclusive Album Premiere

Singer-songwriter Richard Marx has done plenty during his illustrious nearly 30-year career. There’s been classic single’s like “Right Here Waiting” from his 1989’s “Repeat Offender” album. And to this day, he is the only male artist in the history of the Billboard charts to have his first seven singles reach the Top 5 of the Hot 100.

Lately, though, Marx got in a songwriting groove that led him to today, the eve of his new album "Beautiful Goodbye” being released.

"I wasn't really intentionally 'making an album,'” Marx tells Billboard of the set, out July 8. “I was, as is usual, writing songs with a variety of other artists for their projects, and writing my own songs in-between, when I realized a few of the latter really fit well together, and so I kept going in that direction. The album is musically diverse in that it draws influences from everything from EDM to Sade to Chopin to Antonio Carlos Jobim.” Listen to the album exclusively here on Billboard:

As far as content and vibe, one word likely describes "Beautiful Goodbye” best: sexy. Marx explains, “it's mostly a series of songs about seduction, sex, and the mystifying sensual dance between two people.

His two current favorite songs on the set are “Whatever We Started” and “Beautiful Goodbye.” “These choices may change daily,” he adds, “but at this moment, it's those two. They're both heavily influenced by some of the EDM I've been listening to the past few years, especially trance stuff. That's very sexy music to me.”
