Prince Has New Songs with Rita Ora, Inspired By #ThisCouldBeUsButYouPlayin Meme

A new Prince album may soon be upon us, including a rap track with Rita Ora and a ballad inspired by the #ThisCouldBeUsButYouPlayin Internet meme.

Speaking with the Minnesota Star Tribune, Prince didn't give any name or release date for his new material but expressed frustration about how slowly his label, Warner, is working to get his new album out. 

"Every No. 1 song, every Top 10 song, every song in the Top 40 is at least six months old," he said. "We should be able to make music and put it out now."

Of that he played journalist Jon Bream — after someone from Prince's camp called him to hear new music at the Purple One's request at 1 a.m. on a recent night — one included a track with Ora, described as a "rare rap song on which the music was as aggressive and menacing as the rapping." 

As well, Prince explained the ballad "This Could Be Us" was inspired by an incarnation of the #ThisCouldBeUsButYouPlayin meme of him and Apollonia riding on a motorcycle in the 1984 movie "Purple Rain." Bream described that as "a joyful ballad with some ecstatic Prince vocalizing."

Prince has not released a new album since 2009's Target-exclusive "LotusFlow3r," which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. His album with his band 3rdEyeGirl, "Plectrum Electrum," was announced earlier this year but has not been released yet.
