After scoring his first Hot 100 hit last year with "What About Love," Mahone has anxiously awaited the release of "The Secret," which features the Pitbull-assisted single "Mmm Yeah" and the tender ballad "All I Ever Need." During the sit-down, Mahone discussed his dedicated fan army of Mahomies, working with producer RedOne on "The Secret," and his own reliance on Twitter, on which he has amassed 6 million followers.
"It's so, so important to me," said Mahone of using Twitter. "I like to tell my fans where I'm going next and what I have coming up."
Before Mahone took the stage, Billboard co-President John Amato and Head of Twitter Music Bob Moczydlowsky presented the new charts to the audience and explained why dedicated fans like Mahone's Mahomies are the key to what appears on the tallies. The Billboard Twitter Real-Time Charts are new, interactive tallies that rank the most popular songs being shared on Twitter in the United States. The Billboard Trending 140 -- which songs from Mahone's "The Secret" flooded when the chart launched -- is an up to the minute ranking of songs shared in the U.S., measured by acceleration over the past hour. The Billboard Twitter Emerging Artists chart, meanwhile, is a ranking of the most shared songs on Twitter in the U.S. by up-and-coming artists ranked by the number of times each song was shared over the past 24 hours.
Austin Mahone Debuts 'Shadow' on 'Today'
Following the interview, Mahone delighted the crowd of screaming pop fans by picking up a red guitar and performing acoustic versions of "Shadow" and "Mmm Yeah." The performance arrives one day after Mahone took over NBC's "Today" with a three-song performance at Rockefeller Plaza, and before he kicks off a North American headlining tour later this summer.
