Arrest Warrant Issued for Anita Baker

Anita Baker was far from the first to know about her impending arrest, and like many other people, she found out about it from a TV news report.

The 56-year-old soul singer is involved in a legal dispute with a painting and decorating company, which claims she owes them more than $15,000 for work done on her Gross Pointe, Mich., estate.

She went on to share her shocked response on Twitter, writing: "WHATTT??!!...  sittin' in the kitchen watching this on TV. BIG time crazy. Atty on his way to TV Station. Devil sho is busy."

"We certainly would have liked to resolve it before now. We just want to try to get my client his money," said attorney Daniel Gerow, who represents the firm, Ray Smith Painting and Decorating, according to

Gerow claims that  Baker failed to pay the $15,000 bill for renovation work on the Detroit-area home, and then did not appear at court on the scheduled date.

However, Baker's attorney stated: "She had paid them almost $60,000, and the contract was supposed to be far less than that, and at the end, ended up with a job that was very shoddy. Very poor workmanship. She has pictures," said Jamal Hamood.

Hamood told the Associated Press that he plans to file a motion to cancel the warrant, as he claimed that Baker was never served with papers and didn't know that she'd been sued. He added that Baker is out of town and will remain out of town until things are cleared up.
