Perry's ninth Hot 100 No. 1 (and Juicy J's first) maintains its command, aided by a 3-2 lift on the Radio Songs airplay chart with an 11% gain to 132 million audience impressions, according to Nielsen BDS. The track tops Digital Songs for a fifth week, although with a 22% decline to 291,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan; with Perry having performed the song on the Grammy Awards, broadcast on CBS on Jan. 26, it benefited on last week's charts from a full week of post-Grammy buzz. This week, it and other songs performed at the Grammys regress following last week's spike.
"Horse" crowns the subscription services-based On-Demand Songs chart (3 million U.S. streams, down 6%, according to BDS) for a fifth week and holds at No. 3 on Streaming Songs (which it led two weeks ago) with 6.6 million streams (down 12%).
While "Horse" crosses the Hot 100's finish line first again, Pharrell's "Happy" is galloping fast on its tail, roaring 8-2 with dual Digital and Airplay Gainer honors. The latter track climbs 3-2 on Digital Songs (252,000, up 15%) and 15-10 on Radio Songs (85 million, up 45%). "Happy" marks Pharrell's eighth Radio Songs top 10 and second as a lead act; "Frontin'," featuring Jay Z, reached No. 5 in 2003. "Happy" concurrently climbs 15-11 on Streaming Songs (3.7 million, up 14%) and rises 3-1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs to become his third No. 1, and first as a lead artist, on the ranking.
Pharrell momentum is clearly surging. The wearer of Pharrell's hat sang Daft Punk's record of the year-winning "Get Lucky" at the Grammys, and now "Happy," first released on the "Despicable Me 2" soundtrack in June, serves as the lead single from his forthcoming second studio album. The song has garnered added exposure in Beats by Dre ads; is nominated for best original song at this year's Oscars, where he'll perform it (on March 2); and, as announced today, is part of Fiat's new global ad campaign, starring Diddy.
Could "Happy" be a contender for No. 1 on the Hot 100? It seems a solid possibility. But, while "Horse" drops by 12% in overall points and "Happy" hikes by 21%, "Horse" still boasts a fairly comfortable 30% points lead over the latter atop the chart.
Jason Derulo's "Talk Dirty," featuring 2 Chainz, likewise enters the Hot 100's top three, rising 4-3. It backtracks 2-3 on Digital Songs but with a 3% gain to 242,000; pushes 5-4 on Streaming Songs (5.9 million, up 16%); and charges 19-17 on Radio Songs (59 million, up 13%). "Dirty" has been boosted by its "Celebrities Talkin' Dirty" trailer video, featuring artists including Robin Thicke, Flo Rida and Ariana Grande, with One Direction also having posted a clip dancing to it.
'Now 49' Bumps 'Frozen' From No. 1 on Billboard 200
A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera's "Say Something" rebounds from No. 7 back to its No. 4 Hot 100 highpoint. It wins the top Streaming Gainer nod, rumbling 7-2 on Streaming Songs (6.7 million, up 31%) after YouTube user Mark Blitch filmed his 4-year-old son Jackson, who was brought to tears by the powerful ballad. The clip of the youngster experiencing his perhaps most emotional moment to date went viral after its posting on Jan. 29, having accumulated 2.7 global views so far. "Say" also rises 6-5 on Digital Songs (171,000, up 12%) and bullets for a second week at No. 9 on Radio Songs (92 million, up 4%).
Benefiting from its synch in Budweiser's heartstring-tugging ad between horse and puppy pals that aired during Fox's broadcast of the Super Bowl (Feb. 2), Passenger's "Let Her Go" reaches the Hot 100's top five (6-5) in its 28th chart week. It rises 5-4 on Digital Songs (182,000, up 3%) and 8-7 on Streaming Songs (5.3 million, up 9%). (As noted last week, any U.S. streams for the commercial, which premiered online prior to its Super Bowl spotlight, however, do not count toward Billboard charts, as the video clip on YouTube is not categorized under the music banner from which streams are reported.)
"Go" keeps its bullet as it holds at No. 8 on Radio Songs (93 million, up 3%) and rules Hot Rock Songs for a fifth week.
Pitbull's former three-week Hot 100 No. 1 "Timber," featuring Ke$ha, falls 3-6, while OneRepublic's No. 2-peaking "Counting Stars" drops 5-7 (and tops Radio Songs for a fourth week; 141 million, down less than 1%).
Last week, Beyonce rocketed 13-2 on the Hot 100 with "Drunk in Love" (featuring Jay Z), which she performed as the Grammy Awards' opening song. This week, it retreats to No. 8, although it spends a third week at No. 1 on Streaming Songs (6.7 million, down 29%) and stays its No. 14 peak to date on Radio Songs (76 million, 11%). It drops from its No. 7 peak on Digital Songs to No. 13 (98,000, down 35%).
Lorde's "Team" rises 10-9 on the Hot 100 (after reaching No. 8 three weeks ago), highlighted by a 5-3 push on Radio Songs (112 million, up 12%).
Rounding out the Hot 100's top 10, Bastille's "Pompeii" returns to the region, and its No. 10 peak, after a week at No. 11. The former four-week Alternative Songs No. 1 rises 9-7 on Digital Songs (131,000, down 6%), 12-11 on Radio Songs (83 million, up 11%) and 14-13 on Streaming Songs (3.3 million, down 5%).
