'Gangnam Style' Helps Psy Dance Way to No. 1 on Social 50 Chart
South Korean artist Psy is dancing his way up Billboard's charts with his viral phenomenon single "Gangnam Style." This week, he leaps 9-1 on the Social 50 while the tune hops onto Heatseekers Songs at No. 23 and bows at No. 74 on Digital Songs with 23,000 sold (up 96%) according to Nielsen SoundScan. (That's the largest sales week ever for a title on World Digital Songs, where it remains at No. 1.)
The infectious track has been gaining in weekly sales due to the popularity of its video, which has earned more than 75 million views on YouTube. So far, "Gangnam Style" has sold 57,000 downloads in the U.S.
The Social 50 chart ranks the most popular artists on YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter and MySpace, using a formula that blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with weekly artist page views and weekly song plays.
While U.S. radio isn't quite embracing the song yet, it is making inroads. Notably, top 40 station KAMP in Los Angeles, the U.S.' second-largest radio market, added the song last week, playing it 24 times. Those detections amounted to 66% of its overall Hot 100 audience for the week ending Aug. 26 (in total: 949,000 impressions). Rhythmic KDDB Honolulu accounted for the second-most audience last week, from 57 plays.
All of the attention generated by "Gangnam Style" helped bring 54,000 new subscribers to Psy's YouTube channel, which was viewed 1.5 million times during the charting week. Furthering his climb on the Social 50 is a 65% increase in overall fan base, which added 50,000 Facebook fans and caused Psy to break 100,000 total Twitter followers.
Elsewhere in the top 10, Muse re-enters at No. 4 after releasing the lyric video to YouTube for its newest single, "Madness." It's the first single to debut from Muse's sixth album "The 2nd Law" (Sept. 28). Released Aug. 20, the video has brought in over 4 million views and helped cause a 30,000 gain in Facebook fans and an increase of 9,000 Twitter followers.
YouTube artist Kurt Schneider is the second of two big re-entries in the top 10 as he bounds back in at No. 9. The jump back onto the tally comes after he released a cover of Plain White T's "Hey There Delilah" on Aug. 19. It gained 677,000 YouTube views during the charting week, fueling a 32% increase in Schneider's weekly overall fan acquisition.
Elsewhere, Meek Mill enters the Social 50 at No. 32 after traffic from Mariah Carey's newest video (in which he's featured) helps his online follower-base gain traction. "Triumphant (Get Em)" -- which also features Rick Ross -- is the first single from Mariah Carey's yet-to-be-named upcoming album. It has gained over 3 million views since its release, allowing Meek Mill's VEVO channel to experience a 315% increase in traffic. Mill added 78,000 few Facebook fans (70% change) to his overall follower base during the charting week.
As for the rest of the Top 10, Taylor Swift's standing wanes ever so slightly (1-3) while One Direction jumps (8-2) following news of their upcoming new single "Live While We're Young." Justin Bieber holds steady at No. 5 as Rihanna (4-6) and Katy Perry (6-7) fall. Skrillex bounces (11-8) as Pitbull increases his standing in the tally (15-10).
