Executive producer Mark Burnett said Aguilera was his first choice for a female singer. "Christina has a perfect voice and is an undeniable force in the music business. She is the epitome of 'The Voice.'"
Christina Aguilera Arrested for Public Intoxication
Aguilera's most recent album, "Bionic," debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. It spent 14 weeks on the chart, selling 274,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. Her first single, "Not Myself Tonight" peaked at No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100, with total digital sales of 368,000.
The casting of Aguilera, Levine and Green continues the trend among singing competition shows to bring in working musicians rather than executives, songwriters or inactive artists. "American Idol" judge Jennifer Lopez has used the show to launch her upcoming single "On the Floor," which will premiere during Thursday's (Mar. 3) episode of "Idol." Singer-songwriter Ben Folds was a judge on "The Sing-Off" on the heels of the release of his "Lonely Avenue" collaboration with Nick Hornby last year.
The summer singing competition show will premiere April 26, right about the time "American Idol" will be down to its top 10. After two weeks of two-hour shows, "The Voice" will move to a one-hour 8 p.m. slot starting May 10.
