Chord Overstreet Out on 'Glee,' Fans Rally

"Glee's" resident "trouty-mouthed," floppy-haired love interest, Sam Evans, will no longer be a series regular, after just one season on the Fox series.

The season three cast change -- as well as the news that Darren Criss (who plays Blaine Anderson) and Harry Shum Jr. (Mike Chang) would be bumped up to full-time "Glee" cast members -- was revealed late Friday, according to reports from both and Entertainment Weekly.

'Glee' Finale Hits NYC, Misses the Mark With Original Songs

Overstreet, who may return as an occasional guest star, is not alone in the New Directions downgrade. After a prominent storyline with Puck during the second half of season two, Ashley Fink (who plays Lauren Zizes) will remain at a guest star status, with her appearances potentially downgraded.

For Overstreet's fans, the decision not to renew his series regular option was a surprise, as a romantic plotline involving his character and Mercedes (Amber Riley) was set up in the show's season two finale. The fans rallied, buying Overstreet's "Glee" cover of Travie McCoy's "Billionaire" on iTunes. The song made its way to iTunes' "Glee" Top 10 over the weekend.

'Glee Live!' Surprises With Paltrow & Lynch Appearances, a Proposal

Overstreet, who just wrapped the "Glee" Live tour on Sunday (July 3) in Dublin, tweeted about the casting choice. "Well it's been a good yr too bad it's over, time for summer and starting fresh," he wrote on Friday.

The third season of "Glee," which will be the last before the current cast "graduates," premieres Sept. 20.
